This relative inexpensive calculator will allow more high school teachers to teach an area mostly untouched, computer symbolic algebra and computer interactive geometry, because it has not been practical or possible. The TI-92 is merely the beginning of the new revolution of hand-held computing tools. The next challenge mathematics teachers are facing is the teaching of traditional paper-and-pencil symbolic algebra skills. This task has been made obsolete by the more accurate and faster computer symbolic algebra algorithms. Students can get a far better illustration of important concepts and applications of mathematics with these new hand-held tools than with the traditional paper-and-pencil task. The paper-and-pencil task and other traditional skills must still be acquired, but students should spend less time acquiring it. More emphasize must be put on computing tools. Students should take advantage of the computer technology to become powerful and thoughtful "problem solvers." The process of changing from traditional methods to a more computer-oriented environment has to be met by the education and mathematics community. Educators should have textbooks that better represents the new technology. Teachers need to be more technology literate. The mathematics community must dispel the image of "doing mathematics" with the traditional paper-and-pencil method. These reforms can better teach students important skills needed for the future. Life was becoming easier because this younger generation had already put in many years of hard work preparing their land and houses. Their work was done early in their childhood, different from their parents that did the majority of their work in the new land in the middle of their adult years. This is what the Puritans did not take into consideration when they were concerned about how they were living their lives. The Puritan leaders were just concerned about the church community staying intact throughout th e next generation. They didnt realize that the life in New England was just making a shift. There were now many more people there and the population was spread out over a large area. If they could have looked into the average family they would have noticed that life was based around their religion. The easiest way to tell how the families felt about their religion was to simply take a look at their leisure activities. Families were investing in books about religion, such as daily devotionals. The younger generation attended church with the same attendance their parents did, but the church was now being separated between them and the older generation. The preachers now spoke to the people in two different ways. The ones that made the trip across the ocean felt that after fleeing the English homeland they were more spiritually clean after making a great voyage to be able to practice their religion. The younger generation had no experience like this to reassure themselves that they wou ld be holy in the eye of God. The church leaders did not realize that the new generation did have the same exact morals as the generation before them. The younger generation did have their own problems that they had to deal with throughout their lives. There were many different things but they were all still different than the difficulties that their parents had gone through. One of these difficulties was the army of caterpillars that invaded the regions crops. They had to deal with a shortage of food and another breakout of smallpox all at the same time. This is why the preachers were convincing the common folk that they were not being as holy as their parents generation. They thought that God was bringing all of these disasters as a way of payback. One thing I had noticed the most, was how members of the Birling family, had very different reactions to the death of Eva Smith. The Birling familys attitudes towards guilt and responsibility could have been very unlike for a number of factors. During this essay, I am going to study the words and actions of the Birling family and try to link this to the attitudes towards guilt and responsibility felt at the time of the play. The play is written and set just before World War 1 in an upper class family. At the beginning of the play Mr Birling is having a celebration engagement party for his daughter Sheila who is to be married to Gerald. You shortly come to a conclusion that the family is very wealthy, by description of the setting and words and actions of the characters. All five are in evening dress of the period. The tone is very light hearted and everyone seems to be getting on brilliantly. Sheilas engagement to Gerald means a lot to Arthur Birling. The marriage means Birling would hopefully be able to work with Geralds dad in business. Working together- for lower costs and higher prices. Mrs Birling also feels the marriage is important because Sheila is marrying into a higher social status and a very wealthy family. Mr Birling describes this as one of the happiest days of my life. This tone dramatically changes with the unexpected arrival of Inspector Goole. The Inspector questions the family members about a young girl called Eva Smith committing suicide. Every one had taken part in pushing Eva Smith to her death. However, they all acted in very different ways. Mr Birling is a very proud but self-centered and ignorant business owner. I was an alderman for years- and Lord mayor two years ago. He tries to win the inspector to his side in this way by offering him port and with talk about having been a mayor, playing golf with the Chief constable and introducing Gerald as of Crofts Limited. Birling soon begins to dislike the inspector as he does not take any notice of the familys wealth and status. When the inspector Goole mentions that he gave Eva smith the sack he thought nothing of it. As far as he was concerned, what he did was perfectly acceptable. I consider this uncalled-for and officious. After dealing with Mr Birling the Inspector goes to talk to Sheila. Sheila is a pretty girl, who is thoughtful and honest. However at times she also showed she can be hot headed. The Inspector shows the photograph of Eva Smith to Sheila. Sheila acted very violently to the photograph as she Gives a half- stifled sob, and then runs out. This just shows that Sheila recognized the photograph and felt very guilty for what she had done. It was my own fault. Sheila speaks honestly and accepts the responsibility for what she did to Eva. Sheila finds it relatively to relate to Eva smith. This was because they were both young pretty girls who had just been led down different turns in life. If I could help her now I would. Gerald comes across to be quite easy going. You can see why the Birlings want him to marry Sheila, as he is the well-bred young man-about-town. However as you find out later on in the book, he is also very deceptive and secretive. I was awfully busy at the works all that time. Gerald attempts to lie to the inspector and Sheila at first; however he immediately gives himself away by pulling himself together and getting himself a drink after the news. Even after giving himself away, Gerald still only tries to satisfy the Inspector and Sheila, by only giving them small pieces of information instead of the whole truth. All right. I knew her. Lets leave it at that. Gerald however, is the only one who actually showed affection towards Eva Smith. He showed care and became distressed when he found out Eva Smith (or Daisy Renton as Gerald knew her) was dead. In some ways Gerald is like Mr Birling. Mr Birling doesnt think about what he has done, but tries to hide it and prevent a public scandal. Gerald became distressed at the death of Daisy Renton, but at the end of the book this is all forgotten and he is worried only about himself and his own reputation. Gerald has not listened to the inspectors lesson and along with Mr Birling, he thinks everything can go back to normal. Mrs Birling is oblivious to what is going on around her. She is cold, distant and stubborn. Please dont contradict me like that. Mrs Birling thinks very highly of herself and even though she works at a ladies charity; she believes her superiority gives her the right to look down on the lower class. Girls of that class. Mrs Birling became prejudiced of Eva Smith, and felt no guilt in refusing to help a girl like that. But I think she had only herself to blame. In the end, we see her reaction to all these events. Firstly, before the inspector leaves she finds out the truth about Eric, and shows the least composure since the beginning of the play. Distressed, shakes her head but does not reply. Mrs Birling soon gathers composure when she realizes that it might have been a hoax. Sheila said that they began to learn but then stopped. Mrs Birling goes right back to the way she was before. She looks down on her children and the lower classes, and has clearly not learned anything from the past events. In the morning they will be as amused as we are. Eric comes across as being silly and wild and drinking too much. He is a heavy drinker, but his parents are completely unaware of this problem. From the beginning, when the inspector first tells the family about a girl who killed herself, Eric involuntarily shouts out My God! From Erics actions right from the start of the book, we start to get the impression that he has been up to something. This shows that Eric was still feeling very guilty about what he had done. When the inspector starts asking Eric questions he goes on telling a vague story confirming that he did get Eva Smith pregnant and did steal money. Eric trys to blame responsibility onto other then you killed her. . There are no excuses for what at Eric did however at least he has admitted the truth that he was wrong, and knows that the important thing wasnt the money or a scandal, but Eva. The moneys not the important thing. Its what happened to the girl and what we did to her that matters. His parents did not act as badly, but they have not been able to learn this lesson. The Knockout Perfume Scam The closest any of these reports has come to being confirmed was the case of Bertha Johnson of Mobile, Alabama, who told police in November 1999 that she was robbed of $800 after sniffing a cologne sample offered by a stranger and subsequently passing out in her car. Toxicological tests revealed no foreign substances in Johnsons blood, however. Although the details have morphed over time, more recent versions of the story echo early news reports about the alleged Alabama incident. Instead of cologne, the tainted sample is now said to be perfume. Instead of an unknown soporific substance, the knockout drug is now said to be ether. Obey your instincts!*Please pass this on to your friends, sisters, mothers and all the women in your life you care about....... we can never be too careful!!!!* I Did Two Stupid Things More variants appeared almost instantly, usually localizing the story in places where no such crimes had been reported. One version sent later that same month bore the false preamble, This happened in St. Louis. In early December a lengthier version emerged. A woman was approached in a Walmart parking lot by two young men hawking designer perfume, it said, for only $8 a bottle (as in the original version). In this variant the potential victim is said to have declined to sniff the product, and escaped unharmed. Of course, the email strongly urged that it be passed on to friends, loved ones, and co-workers. Subject: Parking lot weirdosThis was forwarded to me - you may be interested:This is quite strange to hear this story because last month I was approached in the Wal-Mart (on Beckly) parking lot by two young men who were selling designer perfume. They stated that it was the excess of a cosmetic show and it was $8.00. I noticed one young mans distinct accent. I asked him if he was from Kentucky. He replied yes. He asked me if I was sure I didnt want to smell the perfume and I once again said no then got into my car. I did two stupid things. First I spoke/conversed with a stranger at 9:00 at night in a parking lot. Second I allowed a stranger into my space without realizing he was moving closer to me. I was on my guard. The Rumor Spreads to Walmart and Target The Walmart version was still going strong when yet another variant appeared describing yet another new incident, this one having allegedly occurred in the parking lot of a Target store in Plano, Texas. In this rendering, disaster is once again averted when the would-be victim rebuffs the salesmans advances before he even tells her what hes selling. The warning is all the more frightening, however, because it gives the impression that similar crimes are being perpetrated all over the United States. In January 2000 someone completely rewrote the text emphasizing the close call scenario and crediting earlier versions of the email with preventing more such crimes from taking place: Come April 2000, another report of an incident in a Walmart parking lot is appended to the foregoing version. Note that the two males described in this variant are neither hawking perfume nor asking anyone to sniff a sample. They merely inquire as to the kind of perfume the narrator is wearing: I just wanted to pass along that I was approached yesterday afternoon at around 3:30 p.m. in the Walmart parking lot at Forest Drive by 2 males asking what kind of perfume I was wearing. I didnt stop to answer them and kept walking toward the store. At the same time I remembered this email. The men continued to stand between parked cars I guess to wait on someone else to hit on. I stopped a lady going toward them, pointed at them, and told her what they might ask and NOT to let them get near her. When that happened, the men and a lady (I dont know where she came from!) started walking the other way toward their car parked in far corner of the parking lot. Cathy Dont Stop for a Stranger... This  wordy  variation, which also appeared in late April 2000, describes yet another close call, though this time the story is completely secondhand. Its set in Kansas City: Two weekends ago, Mom, Melody and I were shopping at The Home Place at about 95th Metcalf and while I was driving around the parking lot looking for the closest parking spot, we saw a man individually approach two single women and speak to them. They both just kept walking and wouldnt have anything to do with him.When we got into the store we saw one of the women that he spoke with and so curiosity getting the best of us we went up to her and explained that wed seen the man approach her in the parking lot and we were wondering what he wanted. She then told us she was so scared that she had to sit down so we found the section with lawn furniture and we all sat down.She explained that just a few days prior she had received and e-mail about a man approaching you in a store parking lot asking if youd like to smell a perfume, explaining that hes got all of the latest fragrances at drastically reduced prices and that hes sure youll like this one (as he hands you the bottle) you take it an d smell it and pass out because its ether, not perfume. She said that was this mans exact line and that when she saw him pull a bottle out from his jacket, she said dont open that bottle or Ill scream and call the police on my cell phone. Well, we walked her to her car when we were all done shopping so she didnt have to go back out there by herself and we talked about it for a few minutes. Three Versions in One The knockout perfume legend took the form of an omnibus version in 2000, including a new scenario that supposedly took place at a gas station in Des Moines, Iowa, followed by two of the previous versions. I received this email from a friend!I was pumping gas at the Texaco station at Merle Hay and Douglas approximately a week and a half ago and a young girl walked up to me and asked if Id like to sample some perfume scents. She said that they had all the latest fragrances. I looked over at her car which was a turquoise sub-compact and her boyfriend (?) was rooting through the trunk. I declined, saying that I had to get back to work. She said again that they had all the latest scents and it wouldnt take long. I again declined and went inside to pay for my gas. She said, Thanks anyway, and went back to her car. When I pulled out, the two were just sitting there in the car. She smiled and waved. I thought it was an odd thing at the time, but the note below really brings it home that it could have been part of this indeed frightening scenario. I dont know WHAT they had in mind, but I can verify that this happened to me here in Des Moines. Please be careful,ladies. The Storys the Thing In true folkloric fashion, not one of the anecdotes youve just read is supported by anything more than hearsay, and anonymous hearsay at that. It doesnt necessarily follow that every report is false, but skepticism is in order. The moral message people are conveying by amplifying and spreading this legend is a familiar one, amount really to little more plain old common sense: Be careful out there. Thats a good message and a wise policy, but we have to question whether repeating frightful stories with little or no  basis, in fact,  is the best way to inspire prudent behavior. Urban legends often take the form of cautionary tales, but it would be a mistake to assume that they always actually function as such. Urban legends thrive, mainly, because theyre emotionally gripping stories. To the extent that they serve any social purpose at all, its probably more catharsis than anything - providing a belly laugh when were blue or a bone-chilling scare to release pent-up tension. Plus, dont forget, theres an all-too-human pleasure to be had by provoking these reactions in others. In days gone by, people sat around for hours in the glow of a campfire scaring the pants off one another with horror stories for no other reason than that they enjoyed it. Human nature hasnt changed. We still enjoy scaring each other, only now we do it by the glow of a computer screen instead of a crackling fire. Profile of Serial Rapist and Killer Cesar Barone Cesar Barone was a convicted serial rapist and murderer whose preferred victims who were senior-aged women. Even the hardest of criminals found Barone repulsive and his crimes so inhuman and revolting that there was an exception to the rule among the inmates, that in his case, snitching on him was acceptable. Childhood Years Cesar Barone  was born Adolph James Rode on December 4, 1960, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. For the first four years of his life, Barone received loving attention from his parents and his older brother and sister. But soon after turning four, his mother fell in love with another man and left the family. Rodes father worked as a carpenter and struggled to maintain a balance between working and raising three children on his own. It was not long before he had a girlfriend, Brenda, who would often care for the children when Rode had to work. During that time, she developed a special relationship with Jimmy because he was the youngest and because he was the most difficult of three children to discipline. In March 1967, Rode and Brenda married and she seemed to naturally glide into the role of step-mother. She had a good relationship with the two older children, but after caring for Barone for two years, she had developed some real concerns about his development. She told Rode senior that the child needed psychiatric care. Although he agreed, he never made the arrangements. Other than having to deal with disciplinary problems with Barone, life in the Rode home was going along nicely. Rode senior was making more money in his new job as superintendent and the family moved to a new home in an upscale neighborhood. The children enjoyed their own swimming pool and visited Brendas mother regularly at her ranch where there were ponies for the kids to ride. However, life began to sour after Barone started going to school. Brenda received regular calls from Barones teachers in regards to his bad behavior. He was always stealing toys in nursery school. He was expelled from kindergarten because he was such a troublemaker. In the first grade, his behavior grew even worse and he began to threaten the other children, sometimes with knives, other times with lit cigarettes. Barone was so difficult to deal with that that he was banned from coming into the school lunchroom. Brendas attempts to discipline Barone failed. Barones father dealt with his sons problems by making an effort to show him more attention. He would take Barone and his older son Ricky to play golf and attend sporting events. Teen Years By the time Barone reached his early teens, he was out of control. He had become a regular drug user, often smoking pot and downing LSD or snorting cocaine. He regularly shoplifted especially for beer, burglarized nearby homes and harassed his elderly neighbors for money. The pressure in the Rode home became intense, as did the family arguments over how to deal with Barones poor behavior and his obvious lack of respect for Brenda. Unhappy with the situation, Rode and Brenda separated, and Barone got what he had hoped for - Brenda was out of the picture. Without her constantly monitoring his behavior and reporting it all to his father, Barones behavior grew even worse as did his obvious disdain for women. Alice Stock Alice Stock was a 70-year-old retired teacher that lived alone, not far from the neighborhood where the Rodes lived. On the evening of October 5, 1976, Stock called a friend for help. She told her friend that Barone had broken into her home, threatened her with a knife, and demanded that she remove all of her clothing. Frozen in fear, the elderly woman did nothing and Barone left without harming her. Barone was arrested and sentenced to two months and 11 days in a Florida reform school. From Shoplifting to Burglary April 1977 - Barone was questioned and then released after he admitted to burglarizing three homes of elderly women who lived alone.   August 23, 1977 - Barone was arrested on another burglary charge, but released. August 24, 1977 - Barones fingerprints were found inside a home that had been burglarized near the Rodes home. Barone ultimately confessed to nine other burglaries and unlawful entry into two other homes, but only because the detective questioning him agreed not to press charges if Barone was honest. First Prison Sentence Barone, now 17 years old, never faced charges on the multiple burglaries, but he was arrested and charged with burglarizing the house where his fingerprints were found. On December 5, 1977, Barone was sentenced to three years in the Florida State Penitentiary.   At the time, Florida had a system that allowed young, nonviolent offenders to bypass the hardcore state prisons. Instead, Barone was sent to Indian River, a low-level prison that was more like a reformatory and that had liberal parole policies for inmates that adapted to the environment, did their jobs and behaved. At first, Barone appeared to be going along with the program. By the middle of January 1979, he was transferred to a low-security institution and permitted to work outside of the prison. If he continued on as he had been doing, he was looking at being paroled by May 1979, seven months short his three-year sentence. However, it wasnt in Barones design to be good, at least for not long. After being there for a month, Barone was cited for failing to be at his assigned job and also suspicion of stealing money from the job. He was promptly sent back to Indian River and all parole dates were off the table. Barone quickly cleaned up his act again, followed the rules and by November 13, 1979, he was released from prison. A Second Attack on Alice Stock Two weeks after Barone had returned home, Alice Stocks nude body was found in her bedroom. The autopsy report showed she had been beaten, raped, and sodomized with a foreign object. All evidence, although only circumstantial, pointed to Barone. The case remained officially unsolved. No Boundaries In January 1980, Barone and the rest of the Rode family, including the ex-stepmother Brenda, were still mourning the tragic death of Barones older brother Ricky, who had died in a car accident three days after Christmas. Ricky was the proverbial perfect son, a nice young man and a great brother to Barone, despite that they were opposites in every aspect of life. Most anyone who knew the Rodes probably shared a similar thought that the wrong brother had died. According to Brenda, she said as much directly to Barone during the funeral  but instantly regretted it.In an effort to make amends, she gave Barone a car that she no longer needed, a gift he readily accepted. A month later, Barone, now 19 years old, showed up at Brendas home and said he needed to talk and that he was upset about Ricky. She invited him in and although they did talk for awhile, that was not the real intention behind Barones visit. Just as he was about to leave, he viciously attacked Brenda and raped her, telling her he had thought about doing it for years. After the rape, he began to strangle her, but she fought and managed to escape to the bathroom. Barone left after several failed attempts to open the bathroom door. As soon as she felt it was safe to leave the bathroom, Brenda contacted her ex-husband and told him about the attack and showed him the bruises on her neck. Brenda and Rode decided not to call the police. Barones punishment was that he would no longer be part of the Rode family. Their relationship was forever severed. A Call to Mother Around mid-March 1980, Barone was arrested for attempted burglary. If found guilty, he was also going to be in trouble for violating his parole. He called his real mother and she posted his bail.   Mattie Marino Mattie Marino, age 70, was Barones grandmother on his mothers side. On the evening of April 12, 1980, Barone stopped by Matties apartment and said he needed to borrow thread. Then, according to Marino, Barone attacked her, hitting her with his fists and then beating her with a rolling pin. He then choked her and smiled while he applied more pressure. She begged him not to hit her again and he abruptly stopped, took her checkbook and money and left the apartment. Barone was found not guilty of the attempted murder of Marino. However, he was not a free man. His parole had been revoked for the March burglary charges and he went from the courtroom to a jail cell to await his trial that was scheduled for the following August. A Real Prison This Time In August, Barone was found guilty of burglary and sentenced to five years, but this time in a prison for adult criminals. Despite the judges sentence, if he followed the rules, he could be out in two years.   Typically, Barone could not follow rules and in July 1981, with just a little over one year left before being paroled, Barone attempted to escape while working on a highway. He continued to violate prison rules over the next month. This earned him an additional year onto his original sentence. Because of the attempted escape, Barone was moved to another prison.  It was decided that the best place for him was the Marion Correctional Institution. Barone was a trouble maker at Marion, just like he was at the other prisons. His infractions included fighting with other inmates, leaving his assigned work areas, and shouting obscenities at prison employees. He went from being categorized as a medium risk to the next highest level, a close (or high) risk inmate. He was transferred to the Cross City Correctional Institution and his new release date, if he stayed out of trouble, was October 6, 1986. Gladys Dean Gladys Dean was a 59-year-old prison employee that had worked for several years overseeing the prison kitchen. Barone was assigned to cleaning the room where the kitchen garbage was thrown and Dean was his supervisor. On August 23, 1983, Barone physically attacked Dean and tried to remove her clothing, then began to strangle her, but Dean managed to get the upper hand and Barone fled the kitchen. Barone continued to the test the system and during a search of his cell, pieces of a hacksaw were discovered under his mattress. Prison officials decided he was too high risk and at the end of October  1983, he was moved to the Florida State Prison, which was considered in the world of convicted criminals as being hard time. There he received an additional three-year sentence for the attack on Gladys Dean.   Barone was now looking at being in prison until 1993. Had he behaved he could have been out in 1982. This was possibly a wake-up call for Barone. He managed to stay out of trouble and was given a new parole date of April 1991. Ted Bundy During his time at Florida State Prison, Barones work assignment gave him the opportunity to meet and talk with serial killer Ted Bundy who was awaiting execution. Barone, who was in awe of Bundy, took pride in their supposed conversations and he liked to brag to the other inmates about it.   Prison Romance In July 1986, Barone and a woman from Seattle, Washington, 32-year-old Kathi Lockhart, began corresponding through letters. Lockhart had placed an ad in the singles section of the newspaper and Barone had answered it. In his first letter to Lockhart, he described himself as being an Italian from Milan and he inflated his educational background, saying he had studied languages in three different countries. He also added that he had been in the Italian Special Forces. Lockhart found his profile interesting and they continued to write to each other on a regular basis. It was during their correspondence that Barone (who was still going by his birth name, Jimmy Rode) decided to officially change his name to Cesar Barone. He explained to Lockhart that he had always felt that he should have the family name of the people who raised him in Italy.   Lockhart believed all of the lies that Barone fed her and they formed a relationship which was solidified face-to-face in April 1987 when Barone received an early parole date and was released from prison. With nothing left for him in Florida and with a feeling of liberation of having a new name, Barone headed to Seattle.

It seems to have been used as a government propaganda source. The photo is to encourage people to evacuate their children, also to get people to look at the people in the picture see the faces in the picture and look at their spirit and get them to follow the example. I have made this conclusion because the picture looks as if it has been taken from high up and at an angle looking down, also all the people are waving and they all look happy and the formation theyre walking in is pretty organized. The government wanted this because they wanted people two evacuate. Source C is a teacher being interviewed in 1988 remembering what happened the teacher tells us about the start of the journey at the train station about the mothers trying to shout to there children good bye because they wont see them for a long time. The teacher might not remember every thing because its 50 years after the event so his memory would be patchy or might only focus on just the bad points in instead of the good. This source was probably made for teaching aides or an archive because sources e and f are also dated 1988. I think that source C is the most valuable source as evidence as what happened because source b was probably set up by the government to get people to agree with them that children should be evacuated this was important to the government because they dont want children among the casualty list also they want to keep that generation because in ww1 they lost a generation of men. Source C is someone who was their giving their opinion on the matter this is valuable because someone is recalling the truth as they saw it happening before them. The extract comes from a book called Carries war it was written in 1973 by Nina Bowden. The book is a childrens novel it has been written to entertain children. This would affect the book by changing facts and figures because she needs to make it more interesting. The context of this story is the evacuees Carrie and nick being taken back to there evacuation home by there carer Miss Evans before this scene they would have had been at the train station being issued to there cares. Miss Evans thinks that the evacuees Nick and Carrie are poor Carrie and Nick think that its funny and arent really bothered. The characters think this because the children saw evacuation as a big adventure but the adults saw the children as smelly little things. The conditions some of the children come from were terrible the houses were terraced close together and very poor quality. I think this source is not very reliable at all it is a story it is a story it is made to entertain little children problems would be that the facts may be different and could that the author doesnt have a clue.
